PETALING JAYA: When it comes to delivering goals on the biggest stage, few can match Johor Darul Ta’zim’s (JDT) prolific striker Bergson da Silva.
The 35-year-old Brazilian has built a fearsome reputation since joining the Southern Tigers in 2021, particularly in the Malaysia Cup, where his clinical finishing has made him one of the most feared forwards in Malaysia.
JDT will once again look to Bergson for inspiration when they face Kuching City in the Malaysia Cup final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow.
Bergson’s record in the competition speaks for itself.
In 30 Malaysia Cup appearances, he has netted 36 goals and played a pivotal role in JDT’s title triumphs in 2022, 2023 and the 2024-2025 season.
For the current Malaysia Cup campaign, he has scored three goals in four matches. In all competitions this season, he has scored 42 in 46 matches.
And with partners like fellow Brazilian Jairo da Silva, known for his industry upfront and mercurial playmakers like Spaniard Ager Aketxe and Argentinian Manuel Hidalgo providing ammunition, goals are guaranteed from the player, who is expected to be naturalised for Harimau Malaya soon.
The Southern Tigers are also eager to bounce back after their painful exit to Buriram United in the Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup semi-finals last week, where they lost 3-4 on aggregate.
Winning the Malaysia Cup would not only restore confidence but also secure a fourth consecutive title.
Bergson believes JDT’s experience in high-pressure matches will stand them in good stead.
“Atmosphere will not be an issue because we have played in environments like this quite regularly,” said Bergson.
“From our previous game in the Shopee Cup, we learned a lot. We showed fighting spirit, scored twice and took the game into extra time.
“JDT are a side that always fights. Whenever we face setbacks, we learn from them and look to improve.
“This final is our opportunity to end the season on a high and carry that momentum into the upcoming campaign.”
JDT coach Xisco Munoz also acknowledged Bergson’s importance to the squad amid speculation surrounding the striker’s fitness ahead of the final.
“Will it give us more confidence if Bergson starts? Of course,” said Munoz.
“Personal milestones are important, the most important thing is that he scored recently. He is the league’s top scorer with 27 goals, which is fantastic for him, the team and his teammates.
“Having a number nine of his calibre is vital. Bergson is a legend for both this club and the country. Who wouldn’t want to start him?”
