KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) secured a comfortable cushion in the Malaysia Cup semi-finals after beating Kuala Lumpur 4-0 in the first leg match on Friday (April 3).

The Southern Tigers struck early at the Cheras Stadium as Bergson da Silva scored just five minutes after kick-off.

Defending champions JDT then doubled their lead before half-time as Spanish midfielder Ager Barrutia found the back of the net in the 30th minute through a beautiful free kick.

The City Boys had chances to get back in the fight, but Safawi Rashid’s free-kick attempt at the start of the second half was just inches wide.

JDT got their third goal in the 59th minute after Oscar Pasero chipped the ball over Kuala Lumpur goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad.

Nacho Mendez had the chance to get on the scoresheet, but his goal in the 77th minute was disallowed by VAR.

Barrutia then sealed the win for JDT with his second goal of the night in the 83rd minute.

The return leg fixture will be played on Tuesday (April 7) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.
