PETALING JAYA: Striker Luqman Hakim Shamsudin has reminded fans why he was once hailed as the future of Malaysian football based on his strong performances in the past four Super League matches.

The 23-year-old marked his gradual return with a standout performance when he helped Negri Sembilan beat Kelantan 2-0 at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Wednesday.

Luqman struck twice in the 36th and 49th minutes.

Both goals were the product of his tireless work rate, as he pressed defenders relentlessly, forced errors and capitalised decisively.

He had also been impressive in the game against Terengganu, where he scored in the 1-1 draw; and started against Melaka (they lost 0-2) and drew 1-1 against Kuala Lumpur.

Luqman, who was tipped to become the next Mokhtar Dahari, returned home to join Negri Sembilan early this year after a lean spell abroad, where opportunities were limited during stints with KV Kortrijk in Belgium, Njardvik in Iceland and YSCC Yokohama in Japan.

Even upon his arrival at Negri Sembilan, Luqman had to bide his time, gradually earning minutes through substitute appearances.

However, his patience has paid off.

In the last four league games, he has been handed starting roles and responded with three goals, a clear sign that he is rediscovering his form.

Luqman’s resurgence has lifted the mood among fans and coaching staff alike, particularly head coach Nidzam Jamil.

“Three goals from a local striker at this stage of the season is considered very good,” said Nidzam.

“I would have loved to see him score a hattrick against Kelantan, but the two goals were more than enough for us to secure three valuable points.

“This is Luqman’s first season with Negri and in the Malaysia League. I believe he will continue to learn, challenge himself to improve, and eventually reach his peak performance level.”

Negri currently sit sixth in the league standings with 17 points from 12 matches, and they will be hoping Luqman can continue his fine run to drive the team towards more victories and re-establish himself as one of the nation’s top attacking talents.
