PETALING JAYA: With mercurial hitman Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin out injured, speedy winger A. Selvan could turn out to be Negri Sembilan’s match winner against Melaka at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium today.
The 25-year-old Selvan has been the Deer’s creative force this season with six assists, the highest in the team, in 26 matches so far.
But something’s missing despite his inspiring displays.
Selvan has yet to score a single goal and Luqman’s absence could pave the way for him to break the duck.
Selvan, determined to help his club improve on last season’s 12th-place finish, is prepared to step up and get on the scoresheet to ensure victory.
“As attackers, it is our duty to help the team create and finish chances,” said Selvan.
“Sometimes I play as a winger to create chances from the flank, and at times as a fullback, which demands much fitness.
“With injuries, especially to Luqie (Luqman), the responsibility has fallen on all of us to deliver.
“If I get goalscoring chances, I will stay composed to finish them, while continuing to create chances for the team.”
Negri are currently seventh in the league with 24 points from 21 matches, just one behind sixth-placed Immigration and one ahead of Brunei (eighth).
