PETALING JAYA: For Pedro Santos (pic), football has always been about embracing challenges.
And in August, the 27-year-old Brazilian took on his biggest one yet, leaving Brazil for just the second time in his career to sign with Super League newcomers Immigration.
Known primarily as a defensive midfielder but equally comfortable dictating play in central roles, Santos has already featured twice in the league and once in the FA Cup.
While the results have yet to deliver a maiden league win for Immigration, Santos believes progress is just around the corner.
“I am still adapting, it has only been three matches, but I am happy to be here, playing in the Super League and wearing the Immigration jersey,” said Santos.
“The climate is similar to Brazil, a little warmer, so that has not been an issue. As for communication, coach Yusri (Che Lah) has been great. He understands the league well and has really helped me settle in.”
After beginning his career with America-MG, Santos spent a season in Portugal with Pedras Rubras before returning home to Brazil, where he turned out for America-RN, Sertaozinho, Parana, Comercial-SP, Nacao SC and Brasil de Pelotas.
Those years, he admits, had hardened him for the unpredictable nature of football. Armed with vast experience, Santos said he was relishing the chance to play alongside fellow foreigners Eduardo Sosa and Rafael Holstein.
“The guys here in midfield have been fantastic. They share their knowledge of the league and that makes it easier for me to adapt,” said Santos.
“Playmakers like Sosa and Rafael, make the game more fluid. We will only get better as the season goes on.”
Immigration’s next test comes against Kuching City at the State Stadium in Kuching on Sept 28, a side known for their strength at home.
“All the Super League matches are challenging, and Kuching will be no different. They have strong playmakers like Daniel (Amier Norhisham) and (Petrus) Shitembi, but so do we. I look forward to that duel, it will be a good game,” he said.
