PETALING JAYA: Brunei coach Jamie McAllister is getting a taste of what the Super League is like, and he admits the challenge is tough.
Brunei are in search of their first win in the season after suffering a 3-0 loss against Selangor at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Tuesday, following their 2-2 draw against Police in their season opener on Aug 9.
McAllister drew a comparison to the Scottish Premier League, saying the Super League possesses some tough opponents.
“It’s quite similar to the Scottish Premier League actually. It’s physical, and there are a lot of good quality players,” said McAllister.
The 47-year-old from Glasgow had spent several years playing in Scotland’s top flight with Aberdeen, Livingston, and Heart of Midlothian.
Having also been at Brunei’s helm while they competed in the Singapore Premier League last year, McAllister added that the Super League is a different level, but is nevertheless confident his team can bounce back.
“The Super League is also a tougher league than what the Singapore Premier League is. So it’s a big challenge for us, and one we’re looking forward to,” he said.
The match saw the Red Giants bag their first win of the season, thanks to Thai international Kevin Deeromram’s two goals before half-time and one from Brazilian import Chrigor Moraes in the second half.
Despite the win, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi wants to see a stronger display in the attacking department from his team.
“The 3-0 win is a good result, but we had a lot of open opportunities that we didn’t take, so that’s something we need to work on,” said Kinoshi.
“Sometimes opportunities only come once in a match. A goal will change the direction of the team.”
The Red Giants’ next match will see them take on Malaysia University in the FA Cup on Saturday, while Brunei play Kuching on the same day.
