PETALING JAYA: Former Kuala Lumpur goalkeeper Azri Ghani has described his move to Negri Sembilan as a leap of faith and a fresh chapter in his career.
The 26-year-old, who established himself as one of the most promising goalkeepers in the Super League during his time with the City Boys, admitted that leaving the capital was an emotional decision, but has come to accept it with an open heart.
“I’m sad to leave a place that gave me the highs,” said Azri.
“KL gave me the chance to show that I could be one of the top keepers in the league and even wear the national team jersey. I’ll always be grateful for that.”
But when the Deer came calling, Azri saw more than just a transfer – he saw a calling.
“Moving to Negri, I see it as a blessing from God. I moved because I saw something special and I wasn’t afraid to make the change. It’s a new life for me, a new challenge and the project here was very enticing.”
With the new season fast approaching, Azri is settling well with his new teammates and coaching staff.
He believes the squad, still gelling but full of potential, have the right mix to surprise a few this season.
“It’s been interesting so far, getting to know the players and the coaches. There’s a good vibe here and I hope we can adapt quickly and do something special.”
The tests will come early for Azri and Negri with the season opener against reigning champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at the formidable Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Aug 12, followed by a clash with last year’s runners-up Selangor in Paroi on Aug 24.
“We know it won’t be easy.
“But we hope to give our best, especially against the top teams. We’re here to compete - Insyallah, we’ll be ready.”
For Azri, the journey may be different but the fire still burns the same. Negri represent not just a new home but a new mission – one he’s fully committed to.
