Oil-rich Brunei are set to spice up Malaysian football again

KUALA LUMPUR: Brunei are back to spice up the Malaysian football scene.

After months of speculation regarding their return, Brunei have expressed their intention to compete in the Super League next season in a brief statement released on their official website on Wednesday.

“We are eager to return to Malaysian football after 17 years,” the statement read.

Brunei are no stranger to Malaysian football, having first joined the league in 1979. The country even etched their name in history by winning the Malaysia Cup in 1999.

Brunei later competed from 2006 to 2008 before making the switch to the Singapore League in 2009.

Previously, acting chief executive officer (CEO) of the Malaysian Football League (MFL), Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd, stated that the final number of teams participating in next season’s Super League would only be confirmed after April 30.

He added that the First Instance Body (FIB) will hold a meeting to determine which teams qualify for a National License, granting them the right to compete in the 2025-2026 Super League.

At present, several teams, including Pahang and Kedah, are rumored to be out of the Super League next season.

However, Kedah have denied speculation about their withdrawal, dismissing the rumors as false information that could tarnish the club’s reputation.
