PETALING JAYA: After a year on the sidelines, Harimau Malaya forward Faisal Halim cherished the opportunity to don the national jersey once again, describing his 17-minute appearance in Malaysia’s 2-0 win over Nepal in the Asian Cup qualifiers as a blessing in his career.
The lively winger was introduced in the 73rd minute, replacing Dion Cools, and wasted no time forming a dynamic partnership with Arif Aiman on the right flank, causing problems for Nepal’s defence.
Faisal revealed that a week before the match, national head coach Peter Cklamovski had personally asked if he was still interested in representing Malaysia after nearly a year away from the squad.
He did not hesitate to accept the invitation and just before stepping onto the pitch, Cklamovski embraced him and urged him to play with pride for his family, wife and child, who were watching the match.
Faisal’s return marks an emotional comeback after being forced out of the squad following a harrowing acid attack while out with his family in May last year.
His last appearance for Malaysia was in the World Cup qualifiers against Oman at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on March 26, 2024.
“After nearly a year away, this was my first time wearing the national jersey again.
“I really, really missed this moment. Even though I got some playing time, I know there is still a lot for me to improve on. But I’m truly grateful,” he said.
Faisal sees his return as the start of a new chapter, determined to move forward after enduring a difficult period.
“This is definitely a fresh beginning, a new year for all of us. I see this opportunity as a blessing after what I’ve been through. Now, it’s my chance to rise again,” he added.
In the match, Malaysia secured a 2-0 victory through goals from Hector Hevel and Corbin Ong, placing the Harimau Malaya second in Group F, level on points with Vietnam but trailing on goal difference.
