Veteran Fazly won’t get defensive about sharing role with young Zikri

PETALING JAYA: In the modern game of football, it’s easy for an aging veteran to feel threatened by a young up-and-comer in a key position.

But Selangor’s 31-year-old leftback Fazly Mazlan isn’t feeling those kind of vibes despite having to share his role with Ahmad Zikri Khalili, who is only 22.

Fazly said they are not in a situation where they have to fight for the regular spot, as who gets to play depends on the tactical plan of coach Katsuhito Kinoshi from game to game.

And based on that rotational basis, both the defenders are being utilised well by the Japanese gaffer.

“We always see what tactics are used by the coach based on the opponent we are facing. So far this season, Zikri and I have had ample opportunities due to this system,’’ said Fazly.

“Despite our age difference, communication between us is good as we’re always discussing about matches and ways to improve.

‘’Zikri is a young and promising talent and he will be a long-term asset to the team. I’m always ready to help and guide him when needed.’’

Fazly is hoping to figure in Kinoshi’s plans when they take on Pahang in the Super League at the Petaling Jaya Stadium today.

They can expect the Elephants to be a huge obstacle after they qualifed for the Malaysia Cup final.

Fazly, who played for Pahang from 2020 to 2021, is aware of the current quality in the side coached by Singaporean legend Fandi Ahmad.

“Two players stand out for me. Kpah (Sherman) and (Manuel) Hidalgo will pose a huge threat and we will have to be at our best to stop them.’’

Fazly said an added motivation will be the supporters who are expecting an exciting match.

“With the kind of support they’ve shown us, we feel we can’t let them down.’’

Selangor are second in the league with 39 points from 18 matches, while Pahang are 10th with 16 points from 16 games.
