PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) says the process of obtaining Malaysian citizenship for four new mixed-heritage players is now in the hands of the government.
FAM said that the process is currently awaiting final approval from the Malaysian government and added that it is completing documentation for four other players.
"FAM express their gratitude to the Malaysian Government for the support provided in efforts to enhance the quality of the Harimau Malaya team," said the statement from the footballing body.
Earlier this month, Johor Regent and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who is overseeing the national team project, revealed on his social media pages that they have found six to seven mixed-heritage players from Southern Europe.
He also urged the government to expedite the process of getting their passports for them to be available for the upcoming international calendar.
The national squad, under the guidance of new head coach Peter Cklamovski, will begin their Asian Cup 2027 Qualification campaign with their first Group F match against Nepal in Kathmandu on March 25.
