Selangor led by diminutive Ainsyah beat Sabah to lift gold

SELANGOR playmaker Nur Ainsyah Murad in Malaysia Games (Sukma) did everything but put the ball in the net as she led her state to their first ever Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold in women’s football.

Ainsyah was everywhere, with superb dribbling and movement in midfield and precise interceptions and clearances in defence.

The 21-year-old even helped out in attack and although she did not find the target, it was enough to beat Sabah 3-1 at the State Stadium yesterday.

The best part about her growth is the fact that she picked up the game just three years by playing futsal and football. She now plays for Selangor in the Malaysian Women’s League (MWL).

Ainsyah said the journey to being a leader was not an easy one.

“I struggled because my teammates and the coaches believed in me to lead this team. So it felt like a burden for a while. But I am happy and proud to guide these girls,” said the player who is fan of Spanish star and World Cup winner Alexa Putellas.

“I am just 21, so I lack experience as a leader. I take it positively and learn from my seniors in club and country.

“I only started football three years ago.”

In the final, Sabah opened the scoring when Fleyvianniezie Ishak finished off a pass from Waitie Taming in the 10th minute. The lead lasted just seven minutes until Nur Adrienna Zamzaihiri finished off a pass from Nurin Umairah Abdul Manan.

Selangor then doubled their lead through Nurin, who capitalised on a mistake by Sabah goalkeeper Micheline Reyson in the 48th minute. The gold medal was confirmed when Ayuna Anjani Lamsin scored in the 53rd minute.

Aisyah id have some mixed feeling about the victory. Her parents are from Sabah.

“I was born in Selangor but have some Sabahan mix. Both my parents are from Sabah. I felt 50-50 but I play for Selangor, so it is 100% for Selangor.

“I have learned a lot from national coach Soleen (Al-Zoubi). I made a promise to be a better footballer and stay consistent. I was not like this in the past. I was really naughty and playful. But in Sukma, I led this team without losing control and we have the gold medal now. I am maturing as a player and captain.”
