Brendan turns his guns on old mates at Selangor

PETALING JAYA: Brendan Gan (pic) has opened fire – and his next target are his old teammates.

The Kuala Lumpur midfielder scored a goal in their convincing 3-0 win against Negri Sembilan in the Super League at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Friday, and that has inspired him before they face Selangor, a side he captained for four seasons, at the Cheras Football Stadium on July 14.

The 35-year-old Brendan, who joined Kuala Lumpur at the start of this season, finished off a cross from captain Paulo Josue with a thumping header in the 28th minute.

The other goals were scored by Josue (73rd) and substitute winger S. Sharvin (92nd). “It is always great to get off the mark, especially for your new team.

‘‘We are all still trying to figure each other out in how we play and I think we are getting better in terms of cohesion,” said Brendan.

“It does not matter who gets the goal, what is important is we get the win and three points.”

Kuala Lumpur will be taking on a Selangor side that are galvanised by a solidarity forged after Faisal Halim became an acid attack victim at a shopping mall in Damansara on May 5 but Brendan had a different take.

“People say the Selangor team are coming together in solidarity for Mickey. I believe every team support him, not just Selangor.

“We all stand behind Mickey but at the end of the day, when it comes to the football, we will give our all and try our best to get the win.”

The win against Negri Sembilan was Kuala Lumpur’s first of the season and Brendan said they will only get stronger as they understand coach Miroslav Kuljanac better.

“We need to fine-tune small details. We will get stronger as the season goes on.

“I believe I can show leadership on the field and help the others along with what he (Kuljanac) wants in his game plan.”

There was a heartwarming moment during the game against Negri Sembilan when Brendan pulled Sharvin aside for a pep talk after the 23-year-old scored his first goal for the club.

“I always like to give motivation to the boys and Sharvin has been working extremely hard within the team. Anyone can see that he is a great player and has a lot to add to the squad.’’
