Wait-and-see game over total number of teams for Super League

PETALING JAYA: It remains to be seen whether the 2024-2025 Super League season will be a 12 or 13-team competition.

The Malaysian Football League (MFL), in a statement yesterday, revealed the fixtures involving matches from week 1 to week 13 (LS1 – LS13) to allow the Malaysian League clubs to prepare early for the upcoming season.

However, if the independent body, First Instance Body (FIB), decide that only 12 clubs are eligible to compete in the M-League this season, then the MFL will revise the calendar and complete match schedule for the entire season.

The kick-off time for the matches will only be updated upon confirmation from MFL’s official broadcaster.

The MFL added that 12 factors were taken into consideration for setting up the fixtures.

“Twelve factors have been taken into account in determining the schedule involving the FIFA 2023 calendar which includes national team training (2026 World Cup qualifiers), AFC Champions League Elite matches (ACLE), AFC Champions League 2 Matches (ACL2), Asean Club Championship (Shopee Cup), AFC 2025 Under-23 qualifiers, 2024 AFF Cup, 2024 Olympic Games, 2024 Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma),” read the statement.

“There are also other factors such as logistical movement and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) operations, shared venues for matches (Super League and MFL Cup), club resting periods and travel, Federal and State Public Holidays issued by the Prime Minister’s Department.”

Meanwhile, the season opener charity match – the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup match – will take place on May 10.

Like previous season’s the match’s result will be counted as points in the 2024-2025 Super League.

The Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup will pit Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim against Super League runners-up Selangor at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.
