Ex-Malaysian goalie Azmin making great strides in Vietnam as coach

PETALING JAYA: Former national goalkeeper Azmin Azram Abdul Aziz has won big as a coach in Vietnam.

Azmin, who was under the tutelage of Tan Cheng Hoe in the Harimau Malaya set-up from 2017 to 2022, started his role as a goalkeeper coach with club Coang An Hanoi early this year and on Sunday, the club went on to win the Vietnamese top division title.

Under the coaching staff of Brazilian Paulo Foaini, Azmin helped the team finish first in the regular season with 24 points and took the top spot in the Championship round.

And Coang An Hanoi conceded the least goals – 36 in 33 matches.

Azmin had coached Vietnamese international Bui Tien Dung, Do Sy Huy, Hoang Trung Phong and Filip Nguyen.

He expressed his joy over the team’s good run in the league.

“It is wonderful to see my goalkeepers’ dedication and hard work paying off. I wish for their continued success and achievements on and off the field,” said Azmin on his Instagram.

“It never crossed my mind that our team will become the champions of V-League 1. And I thank God for the highest achievement as Coang An Hanoi’s goalkeeper coach in Vietnam.

“My highest appreciation also goes to Effendi Jagan (Abdullah) and Mashiedee (Sulaiman) who have helped me throughout my new career here.

Azmin played for Harimau Malaya from 1998 to 2004 and several clubs in the Malaysian League, namely Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Pahang before retiring in 2006.
