PETALING JAYA: Wingbacks Declan Lambert and Azam Azmi Murad stood up to their baptism of fire creditably and they are now hopeful of making a bigger impact when the Harimau Malaya take on Tajikistan in the King’s Cup final today.

The duo made their international debuts in the 75th minute when the match against Thailand was tied at 1-1. The thrilling encounter then went to a penalty shootout with Malaysia winning 5-3 at the Chiang Mai Stadium on Thursday.

Declan was one of the penalty takers and he nonchalantly stepped up to unleash a venomous shot in the middle giving Thailand goalkeeper Kampon Phatomakkakul no chance.

The Kuala Lumpur player, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Wednesday, was thrilled to help Malaysia make the final. The last time the national side featured in the King’s Cup final was 44 years ago where they emerged champions, beating Singapore 3-2.

Before 1978, Malaysia also lifted the Cup in 1972. In 1976 and 1977, they shared the crown with Thailand and South Korea B respectively when the match ended in a draw.

“I just got to know that we last won it 44 years ago. So this final will be special and we will be pumped up to end the long drought,” said Declan, who is equally adept at rightback, leftback and centreback.

Tajikistan made their way to the final after beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-1.

“As for my first cap, it is heartening to know that the team officials have put their trust in me. I was very nervous but also excited with my debut, especially a day after my birthday. And to score a goal made it more memorable.

“For sure, I want to play in the final but it all depends on the coach’s (Kim Pan-gon) plans. If given the chance, I will give my all.”

Meanwhile, Terengganu’s Azam, a rightback, said it was an honour to make his first appearance against a top side like Thailand.

“Pan-gon knows how important the match was as the Thais are not easy to beat but he still gave us the chance to showcase our talent,” said the 21-year-old.

“To be part of a final in your debut call-up makes you feel extremely proud. Hopefully I’ll get another chance tonight and be of help to the team.

“It’s been a good season for me thus far as I’m getting regular playing time with my club and the national Under-23 team.

“Now I am with the national team. I’m making the right progress and this must continue.”
