Six-footer Hilal out to add more bite to Panthers’ attack

PETALING JAYA: Penang’s Lebanese striker Hilal El-Helwe (pic) is already making his towering presence felt just one week after joining the team.

The 1.86m (6’1’’) striker believes he can adapt to the team’s philosophy and tactics even before the Super League starts.

And his priority is, of course, to gel with Brazilian striker Casagrande and deliver the goals for the Panthers.

“In football, you need time to adapt and I hope to do it fast before the season starts.

“And I know how you need to play as a striker, so I think it’s easier for me to understand his (Casagrande) style of play,” said Hilal.

The 27-year-old, who was born in Hanover, Germany, has 40 caps and last played for Al-Ahed in the Lebanese League.

Since making his professional debut in 2013, he has played for various German clubs like TSV Havelse, VFL Wolfsburg II, Hallescher FC and SV Meppen.

Hilal can play as a striker, playmaker and winger and has the reputation of being a lethal finisher inside the box.

“I am always hungry for goals, success and wins.

“I will give my all for Penang and their fans. I hope we can achieve good results this year.”

Hilal said he joined the Panthers as they finished third in the Super League last season. Furthermore, he believes the quality of the Malaysian League is getting better.

“I decided to test myself in Malaysia because it is a nice country and the football here is pretty entertaining. So I decided to come and hopefully make an impact.

“The players, coaches and even the Penang fans have welcomed me warmly so I intend to repay that love and faith.”

Penang’s first game will be against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on March 4.

And Penang supporters will be eagerly keeping an eye on Hilal to showcase his talent and to help the Islanders return with full points against the eight-time consecutive Super League champions.
