SEREMBAN: Malaysian Premier League winners Negri Sembilan have been forced to pull out of the Malaysia Cup after 20 players and four officials came down with Covid-19.
Negri Sembilan FC said in a statement on Friday (Oct 22) that all 24 players and officials were now undergoing home quarantine.
"The health authorities will continue to monitor them for the next 10 days and will also check on those who came into close contact with the players and officials," it added.
Negri said the decision to pull out of the Malaysia Cup was made following advice from its medical team.
"We would like to apologise to our supporters for this unfortunate development," it said, adding that a friendly game scheduled to be held with Kuching City FC on Wednesday (Oct 20) had to be called off for the same reason.
Negri were crowned Premier League champions on Sept 21, ending a 10-year wait for a major title.
They last won major silverware by lifting the Malaysia Cup in 2011.
In the first two matches of the Malaysia Cup this season, Negri lost to Melaka United FC 2-0 and defeated Kelantan United FC by a solitary goal.
Both games were held away.
Negri were scheduled to play their first home match against Kedah Darul Aman FC on Oct 29.
