PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya City’s coach P. Maniam has urged his experienced charges to be leaders in the team.

With the club going all-local for the new season, the fight for the best eleven is intense and many players who have joined them have shown great commitment to the cause.

But Maniam hopes to see some of his experienced players like midfielder K. Gurusamy, wingbacks Mahali Jasuli, P. Rajesh, winger Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zambri and centreback S. Subramaniam leading the young players in the side.

“We signed Khyril from Selangor, and Subra from Kuala Lumpur because I believe with the experience, they can be a good guide for the team’s youngsters, ” said Maniam, who formerly coached Selangor and the Malaysia Under-16 side.

“Not to forget, those from last season like Guru, Mahali and Rajesh will have to continue leading this team.

“Their duty is not just to play but to organise the side during games. Sometimes in tough situations, you need them to take charge. They must also motivate and support the others in the team.”

Maniam is all smiles although he has a selection headache as he has not identified his best eleven yet – that’s how committed his players are during training.

“They come to training early, and even during fitness and technique sessions, they are fighting to show that they have what it takes to be in the first eleven, ” he said.

“They know that only 100% of effort would do if they want to be selected to play.

“We’ve focused on fitness the first two weeks but will shift to tactics soon and will work on them during our friendly matches.

They have lined up seven friendlies, and just need to confirm the dates with several Super, Premier and M3 league clubs.

“We are also working on team bonding. I want the players to believe in themselves and their teammates, ” he said.

“Going all-local requires major effort, and I’m happy that these players are keen to go in that direction.”

For this season, PJ City have signed players like K. Prabhakaran (wingback), Ahmad Khairil Anuar (midfielder), Darren Lok (striker), Syahmi Zamri (striker), Faiz Mazlan (centreback), M. Tamil Maran (wingback), and Raffi Nagoorgani (centreback).
