Malaysia thrash Guam to book a spot in AFC U-16 Finals

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia have sealed their berth in the AFC Under-16 Championship Finals next year after whipping minnows Guam 13-0 in their final Group H qualifying match at the National Sports Complex Stadium in Vientiane, Laos, on Sunday.

The Malaysians scored six goals in the first half before hitting another seven after the breather to top the group with 10 points.

Malaysia, coached by former international midfielder S. Balachandran, were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Laos in their opening match on Sept 21 before thrashing Brunei 8-0 last Monday. In their third match, Malaysia stunned favourites South Korea 2-0 last Friday.

A total of 43 teams spread over 10 groups are competing in the qualifying tournament. The 10 group winners and five best second-placed teams qualify for the Finals in Thailand next year.
