PETALING JAYA: National cyclists Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, Anis Amira Rosidi and Nur Alyssa Farid rode to silver in the women's team sprint final at the Asian Games track cycling competition at Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka today.
The trio clocked 48.566s in the final to finish behind China's Luo Xuehuang, Yuan Liying and Jiang Yulu, who won gold in a new Asian record of 45.370s.
The previous Asian record of 45.487s was also set by China in 2024.
Taiwan's Wang Sin-ting, Chen Ching-yun and Liu Shang-ying clocked 49.061s to beat Japan, led by reigning world champion Mina Sato (49.137), to the bronze medal.
Earlier, the Malaysian girls had blazed the lanes with a new national record en route to qualifying for the final.
The trio posted the second fastest time of 48.023s in the first round to reach the Asian Games final for the first time by denying hosts Japan in the process.
Malaysia's current national record of 48.086s was only set by Izzah, Alyssa and Anis Amira Rosidi at the Asian Championships in Tagaytay earlier this year.
Izzah, Aliana and Alyssa had earlier clocked 48.187s to place second in the qualifying round.
The Chinese team, led by world No. 1 sprinter Yuan Liying, smashed the Games record in clocking 45.825s.
Japan, led by reigning world champion Mina Sato, posted 49.405s and will fight for the bronze against Taiwan, who clocked 49.504s.
