The MBPJ contingent celebrating their long- awaited victory in the competition at the UiTM Shah Alam Sports Complex.

PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) emerged as the overall champion of the Statutory Body Sports Carnival (Sukanun) 2019 after winning five gold and three silver medals.

The MBPJ contingent won gold medals in women’s futsal, sepak takraw, tenpin bowling, darts and tennis while the silver medals were won by men’s tenpin bowling, badminton and netball.

MBPJ Community Development Department director Aznan Hassan said the victory was significant as the team had to wait nearly 20 years to capture the Sukanun title.

“We participated in this competition at least 10 times previously but we only managed to be among the top three teams,” he added at the closing ceremony of the 11th Sukanun 2019 at UiTM Shah Alam Sports Complex.

Aznan said they had been prepared well in the run-up to the carnival as they were serious about capturing the overall champions title, especially in their own home turf in the Klang Valley.

“In addition to the preparation and commitment of our athletes, the spirit of playing at home was indirectly a driving force for our victory,” he said.

Present at the closing ceremony was UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (Industry, Community, Alumni and Entrepreneurship Network) Prof Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad.

According to Aznan, MBPJ participated in 17 sporting events with a contingent of 248 athletes including officials.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) took second spot with two gold, three silver and three bronze medals, while third place was won by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) with three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

Sukanun 2019 involved 5,000 athletes and officials along with 63 government agencies that are members of the Malaysian Statutory Bodies Association.

The biennial tournament featured nine-sided football (open and veterans), netball, team badminton, team tennis, team golf, team chess, men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s tenpin bowling, men’s and women’s futsal, sepak takraw, men’s and women’s lawn bowl, team darts, team ping-pong, team carom, open petanque, nine-sided hockey, pull ropes and sports.
