Adelia-Adania keep hopes alive in doubles but boys stumble in Kuching

PETALING JAYA: Bowling duo Adelia Nur Izwan Syazalee and Adania Mohd Redzwan maintained their dominant form to secure their place in the semi-finals at the World Youth Championships in Megalanes Sarawak, Kuching, by finishing second in their group.

The pair won six of their seven group matches to achieve a joint-high 18 points with group leaders Erin Klemencic and Elizabeth Teuber of the United States.

Adelia, 19, and Adania, 20, who amassed 1,422 pins, missed the top spot by 160 points.

The pair had topped their qualifying group in the first round.

While the girls are hopeful that this momentum will lead to a podium finish, Adania remains humble.

"It is a good confidence booster, but every match has its own challenge. It is better to take it one game at a time," stated the Asian No. 7.

Her partnership with Adelia had previously resulted in them finishing fourth at the last edition, last year.

"The trust and chemistry we have really shine through on the lanes. We have each other’s back," added Adania.

Before the doubles’ event on Sunday against Swedish duo Nicole Layrisse-Maja Engberg, the pair will compete in the team event.

Having secured the team title at the last world meet in South Korea in 2024, the girls are optimistic about getting a similar result in Kuching.

"The team event has always been our main focus. We are strongest together, and we hope to put in a worthy performance to make Malaysia proud," added Adania.

Meanwhile, it was a day to forget for Qurratu’Ain Izdihar Pozi-Intan Nor Edryana Nor Azliman, as they bowed out of their group in last place with six points and 1,329 pins.

The challenge ended early for the boys.

Ethan Damien Goh-Wan Mohd Zarif Ikram Wan Mazlan secured a 12th-place finish, while Mohd Danial Abu Samah-Mohd Aiman Syahin Sulaiman came in 13th place in the doubles.

In the team event, the national boys squad failed to advance after finishing 28th in qualifying with a total of 1,908 pins.
