Boon Le hopes to raise his stocks at Sukma after missing out on worlds

PETALING JAYA: Rising national shuttler Lim Boon Le (pic) was disappointed when he found out that he was not selected to represent Malaysia at the World Junior Championships in Egypt in October.

Instead of dwelling in self-pity, the 18-year-old is determined to make a name for himself against more experienced seniors at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) starting today at the Setia City Convention Centre in Shah Alam.

“I was sad, but the coach had his reasons,” said Boon Le.

“The players that were selected are better than me.

“I accept that and want to use that as motivation to prove myself.”

Boon Le, who is currently ranked 51st among all juniors in Asia, will be donning Pahang colours at the Games.

He stated that the prospect of facing senior players, specifically world No. 72 Eogene Ewe, is his biggest draw for the Games.

“Although I have never played him in any competition, I hope to face Eogene and learn from him,” he said.

“It will be challenging because everyone is their state’s best.

“I will need to prepare my best and fight for every single point.”

The youngster, who has had a racquet in hand since the age of five, is quietly confident that he can secure a medal at the Games following an eventful July where he secured third place at the Malaysian Junior International Challenge and second place at the Jaya Raya Junior International Grand Prix.
