PETALING JAYA: Doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik suffered a disappointing outing in the Indonesian Open after crashing out in the second round at the hands of young home pair Raymond Indra-Nikolaus Joaquin.
The former world champions struggled to find their rhythm and went down 14-21, 14-21.
Wooi Yik admitted that the conditions at the Istora Senayan were challenging and affected their performance.
“I think it’s not easy to control the shuttle here,” said Wooi Yik.
Aaron, meanwhile, credited the Indonesians for playing with confidence and freedom.
“They’ve got nothing to lose. I think that’s the thing with them,” said Aaron.
Malaysia’s interest is still alive though as Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are just one win away from reaching the semi-finals, but they will have to overcome India’s Hariharan Amsakarunan-M.R. Arjun next.
The former world No. 1 pair head into the quarter-finals brimming with confidence after ending their losing streak against England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy with a convincing 21-11, 21-13 victory in just 30 minutes.
The win was their first over Lane-Vendy after defeats in their previous two meetings, including at the Malaysian Open in January.
Hariharan-Arjun booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging Malaysians Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing 21-16, 15-21, 21-19 in a closely fought second-round match.
Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing bowed out after losing 14-21, 22-24 to last year’s runners-up Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand.
