PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei refuses to be discouraged despite being tested by another serious injury setback in her career.
The world champion is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in her left knee.
The injury has also cast serious doubt over Ee Wei and her partner Chen Tang Jie’s chances of defending their World Championships title in New Delhi, India, this August.
Despite the setback, the 24-year-old remains positive and believes there is a reason behind every challenge she faces.
“Thank you for all the messages and for checking in on me. I’m doing fine, and I truly appreciate all the love and support,” said Ee Wei on social media.
“I believe everything happens for a reason. Hopefully, this injury is preparing me for something even bigger than I can imagine. The road to recovery won’t be easy but I’ve walked this path before, and I’ll do it once again.’’
Ee Wei has endured several serious injuries in the past. In 2024, she required 16 stitches on her left arm after an accident during a gym session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.
She also suffered an abdominal muscle injury last year. The same injury resurfaced earlier this year, although it was not considered a major concern.
The Melaka-born player was also diagnosed with sinus issues in 2019, which led to her departure from the national team. Two years later, after returning to the Badminton Association of Malaysia, she was diagnosed with bone tuberculosis in her back, a debilitating condition that required hospital treatment.
For now, Ee Wei will use this period to focus fully on her recovery. She is scheduled to undergo another assessment on Friday to determine the most suitable treatment and rehabilitation plan for her condition.
“For now, I’ll focus on my recovery. Thank you for standing by me through this journey. Your support means more than words can express. See you all again soon,” she added.
