PETALING JAYA: Staying at the hostel at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara may seem like a simple rule, but some players are still refusing to comply with it.
Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, who chairs the performance committee, said he will no longer tolerate players ignoring the regulation regardless of their status.
According to Chong Wei, the rule has long been implemented by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to instil discipline among players while ensuring they are well-rested for morning training sessions.
His remarks came after he repeatedly received reports and complaints involving players leaving the hostel and returning late at night.
“I already have concerns about this matter and I have also informed the president, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The rule is for all unmarried players to stay at the hostel, except for those who are married,” said Chong Wei.
“There are still a few players who have yet to comply with the rule and we will issue a final warning letter if they continue to refuse. If they continue doing so, we will bring the matter to the council meeting to decide on the punishment.
“I will leave it to the council members to determine the appropriate action against players who refuse to stay at the hostel.''
For Chong Wei, the rule is not about restricting the players’ freedom, but rather a sacrifice they need to make if they want to succeed.
Chong Wei has also asked the management of the ABM hostel to set up a recreational area with entertainment facilities for players to relax during their free time.
He pointed out that he also stayed at the hostel during his playing career until marrying Datin Seri Wong Mew Choo.
“Whatever job you do, whether as an athlete or businessman, discipline is the most important thing because your career is short. You cannot keep playing until you are 50,” he added.
The BAM council meeting is expected to be held on May 24 during the Malaysian Masters at the Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil.
