Zii Jia’s ABM return delayed as ankle rehab continues

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia’s return to train at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) will have to wait.

Zii Jia was expected to report for duty on Saturday (April 4) at ABM to train with the national squad ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals from April 24-May 3 in Horsens, Denmark, but the 28-year-old was nowhere in sight.

National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said he hopes to see Zii Jia on court sometime next week, pending a full recovery from his ankle injury.

Zii Jia was supposed to train at ABM with the rest of the players on Wednesday (April 1), but his injury had delayed his plans.

“No, he (Zii Jia) wasn’t able to join today. When he withdrew from practice last Wednesday, I already knew that the chances were slim for today,” said Jonassen when met at ABM.

“But it’s important that he is fully recovered before he comes. So his focus right now is on rehab and getting ready.

“The overall plan is still in place where he will join us a couple of times next week.”
