Chong Wei plays down Wooi Yik’s Instagram bio change

PETALING JAYA: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei believes there is nothing to be concerned about the change in the Instagram bio of world No. 2 men’s doubles player Soh Wooi Yik.

Wooi Yik recently updated his Instagram bio to “pro badminton player”, sparking speculation over whether he intends to leave BAM.

However, Chong Wei feels that the 28-year-old made the change to reflect his status as a professional athlete, rather than signalling any intention to go independent.

“For me, there is really nothing in it. Every country has a different culture, so when Wooi Yik puts ‘pro badminton player’ in his Instagram bio, many assume he is leaving the national team.

“But in my view, he is simply stating that he is a professional player because this is his career, just like other athletes around the world.

“As for the reason behind the change, I am not entirely sure as I am currently on holiday, but I understand that men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has already confirmed that nothing is going on. He would know better as he works with Wooi Yik and the other players on a daily basis.

“In any case, I will meet Wooi Yik and the rest of the players next week when I return to Malaysia,” said Chong Wei, who is currently in the Maldives.

Earlier, Herry also assured that there is nothing to be concerned about, as Wooi Yik and his partner Aaron Chia are currently preparing for the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships, which will be held in Ningbo, China from April 7 to 12.

The pair have also signed contracts with BAM until 2028 as part of their mission to win a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
