Nova feels Jin Wei’s worth a spot in Uber Cup squad

PETALING JAYA: Should Goh Jin Wei be recalled to the national squad for the upcoming Uber Cup in Horsens, Denmark, this April?

While the spotlight is firmly on the men’s team as they prepare to bring home the Thomas Cup, the women’s squad are quietly building momentum, with their singles players showing signs of resurgence.

Jin Wei has found her form again after four years, reaching the final of the Thailand Masters before having to withdraw in the deciding set against India’s Devika Sihag.

For Jin Wei’s coach, Nova Armada, the player remains a valuable asset despite her ranking having dropped sharply last year.

“Why not include Jin Wei? She showed tremendous fighting spirit in Thailand and even beat two of her compatriots to reach the final.

“For me, she can still contribute because she remains one of the best women’s singles players we have at the moment,” said Nova.

She is not alone in regaining form, as K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching have also delivered consistent performances.

With the promising rise in form from these three players, combined with the strength of the world No. 2 women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, it at least gives the national team greater hope for this year’s Uber Cup campaign.

The women’s squad have gone more than a decade without reaching the Uber Cup quarter-finals, with their last appearance in the last eight coming in the 2010 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
