BAM want BWF to move Malaysian Open to April next year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has requested a date change for the Malaysian Open, moving it from 2027 to 2030.

The home Open, a Super 1000 event, has been the season curtain-raiser from 2023 to 2026.

BAM secretary Kenny Goh confirmed that the national body has requested that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) reschedule the tournament from its original start date to later in the year.

“We have requested that the Malaysian Open be shifted from the start of the year to April or May from 2027 to 2030,” said Kenny.

“We are waiting for BWF’s approval. Hopefully, they will agree to our request.”

BAM’s response comes after men’s doubles shuttler Aaron Chia raised the suggestion to shift the prestigious event to later in the year due to players being fatigued after a long season.

Aaron had suggested starting the year with a Super 300 or Super 100 competition.

Kenny, though, denied that BAM made the request after the 28-year-old’s suggestion.

“Our request has nothing to do with what Aaron said. We already made the request to BWF last May,” said Kenny.
