PETALING JAYA: Former national men’s singles coach Wong Tat Meng is reported to be showing positive signs after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Sydney on Sept 7.
The update was provided by Lim Joe Heang, who had worked with Tat Meng while serving as Lee Zii Jia’s physical trainer.
In a social media post on Monday, Joe Heang said the 58-year-old coach has begun showing encouraging signs.
"Coach Tat Meng is responsive. Despite a lot of injuries everywhere, brain is okay, spine is okay. Strong man with crazy fighting spirit
"Let’s put our energy and strength together and hope for his speedy recovery and stop spreading rumors," said Joe Heang.
Tat Meng, an avid motorcyclist, was seriously injured in a collision involving two motorcycles at Putty Road in Garland Valley.
One rider was confirmed dead at the scene, while Tat Meng was airlifted to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.
Before joining Zii Jia and helping him to win the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year, Tat Meng had already built a colourful coaching career.
He was with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) from 2003 to 2011 and again from 2013 to 2016.
He also served a four-year stint in South Korea from 2019 to 2022, where he guided current world No. 1 An Se-young to become a world champion and played a key role in the country’s Uber Cup triumph.
Prior to that, he spent two years in Scotland from 2016 to 2018.
