PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei's Independence Day wish is to see shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei capture gold in the World Championships.

Pearly-Thinaah and Tang Jie-Ee Wei are set to go up against the 'Great Wall of China'  on Sunday (Aug 31) at 8.40pm in their bid to end Malaysia's wait for the women's and mixed doubles titles in the world meet.

World No. 2 Pearly-Thinaah will take on world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning while Tang Jie-Ee Wei (No. 4) face Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin (No. 2) at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle in Paris.

In a heartfelt message on social media, three-time World Championships silver medal winner Chong Wei said: "Happy Independence Day, my home, my country. Thank you to Pearly-Thinaah and Chen-Toh, who are battling in the World Championships in Paris.

"Hopefully, there will be golden glitter in this special day."

Pearly-Thinaah and Tang Jie-Ee Wei will be out to emulate men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who created history by capturing Malaysia's maiden world title in 2022 in Tokyo.
