Pei Jing finds fresh role in France refreshing indeed

PETALING JAYA: Veteran shuttler Lai Pei Jing (pic) is feeling refreshed after a stint as sparring partner with the French team ahead of the World Championships starting on Monday in Paris.

The 33-year-old independent player might not be heading to the world meet but still played an important role in the likes of world No. 8 mixed doubles pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue’s preparations for the tournament.

Pei Jing herself has competed nine times in the prestigious event in the mixed doubles but could not qualify this time as she only combined with Jimmy Wong in March after ending her long partnership with Tan Kian Meng.

“In the blink of an eye, my 10 days of training in France has come to an end,” said Pei Jing via social media.

“This trip was full of firsts, my first time stepping into the role of a sparring partner, my first time doing it overseas and travelling alone for it.

“It wasn’t always easy but every moment felt new and precious.

“I’m so glad I took this step because it really added a little more colour and meaning to my life.”

Pei Jing also went on to wish all her friends and teammates the best of luck for the tournament.

“As all my friends and teammates prepare for the world meet, my heart is with you all,” said Pei Jing.

“May they race with joy, stay safe and healthy and cross the finish line with pride. Best of luck!”

Pei Jing, who reached the Macau Open final with Jimmy, will compete in the China Masters from Sept 2-7.
