Book of Records recognition serves as further motivation for Liek Hou

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Cheah Liek Hou is now in the Malaysia Book of Records for becoming the first Malaysian to win consecutive Paralympics badminton gold medals.

In August, Liek Hou won his second straight gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris.

On Tuesday, nearly two months after his monumental win, he was recognised for his effort but it was not about the medals alone, but also a tribute to his unwavering spirit and relentless dedication to the sport.

The 36-year-old world champion is determined to work even harder after receiving the honour.

“This recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records inspires me to keep pushing forward and shining along this journey, even as I approach retirement,” said Liek Hou, who also won the men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment) gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo edition.

“It feels rewarding to see my hard work recognised, and I hope to set even more records for Malaysia and for myself, creating a lasting legacy in the world of para badminton.”

Liek Hou is keeping his fingers crossed that his accomplishments will serve as a guiding light for young athletes.

“I hope that my achievements will serve as a good example and motivation for the younger athletes to work hard, chase their dreams and strive to follow in my footsteps,” said Liek Hou.

He is now aiming to win the gold medal in the same category in the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya.

Liek Hou last claimed gold at the Asian Para Games during the 2014 Incheon edition, where he triumphed in both the men’s singles and doubles events.
