Tze Yong could miss Thomas Cup due to injury

Tze Yong's participation in the Thomas Cup Finals is in doubt because of injury.

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong faces the prospect of missing out on the Thomas Cup Finals from April 27-May 5 in Chengdu.

Tze Yong is still struggling to regain full fitness after undergoing surgery at the end of February to deal with a spinal disc injury.

The 23-year-old was selected along with Lee Zii Jia, Leong Jun Hao, Cheam June Wei and Justin Hoh in the singles but could be dropped if he does not recover in time.

The doubles players called up are Aaron Chia, Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei, Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Mohd Haikal Nazri.

National coaching director Rexy Mainaky said on Tuesday (April 16) another player could be called up to replace Tze Yong.

"Tze Yong will undergo a scan to see if he has fully recovered from his injury.

"If he has not recovered, then we have no choice but to replace him in the team," he said.

It will be a big blow to the team's chances if Tze Yong is not fit to play as there are few options available to replace him.

Nineteen-year-old Eogene Ewe could get the nod in his absence.
