All-Malaysian mixed doubles showdown in Iran

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Teoh Mei Xing are on collision course again as both pairs advanced to the final of the Iran International Challenge in Teheran yesterday.

World no. 56 Tang Jie-Ee Wei came from behind to beat Adnan Maulana-Nita Violina of Indonesia 20-22, 21-16, 21-9 in a 49-minute semi-final.

Compatriots Pang Ron-Mei Xing, ranked No. 75, defeated another Indonesian pair Jafar Hidayatullah-Aisyah Salsabila 21-16, 21-12 to book their final berth.

The two pairs have met each other before. Pang Ron-Mei Xing were victorious at the final of the Malaysian International Challenge but Tang Jie-Ee Wei defeated their national teammates in the first round of the India Open in New Delhi two weeks ago.

National mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto was happy that the pairs met their target of reaching the final which would help improve their world rankings.

“Tang Jie-Ee Wei were a little cautious in the first game but managed to find their momentum in the second and third games. Once they had settled down, it was easier for them,” said Nova.

“Pang Ron-Mei Xing played well although they faced a strong challenge from the Indonesian pair in the first game. Overall, it is a good win for them.”

Tang Jie-Eei Wei will have a slight advantage as Mei Xing had also reached the final of the women’s doubles with Go Pei Kee.

Mei Xing-Pei Kee had to play two matches before booking their place in the final. They defeated compatriots Low Yee Yuan-Vanessa Ng 21-15, 21-17 in the quarter-finals before overcoming Sania Lima-Julina Vieira of Brazil 21-11, 21-10 in the last four.

Mei Xing-Pei Kee will play Indonesia’s Jesita Putri-Febi Setianingrum in the final today.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, Justin Hoh advanced to the final after beating Alwi Wijaya of Indonesia 21-14, 21-16.
