PETALING JAYA: It was a promising show from newly-reunited mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See in the first round of the Indonesian Open but the going only gets tougher from today.
Peng Soon-Yee See are set to take on China’s Tokyo Olympic champions Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping for a place in the quarter-finals today in what will only be their third competitive match together since being reunited.
Yesterday, the Malaysian pair put up a solid performance to upset England’s world No. 11 Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith 21-15, 21-16 at Istora Senayan in Jakarta in 40 minutes.
Peng Soon-Yee See are hoping for Lady Luck to smile on them in just their second tournament together after being paired again.
They had been forced to withdraw from the second round of the Indonesian Masters last week after Peng Soon suffered food poisoning.
“We still have many things that we need to improve on as this is just our second tournament together after a long time. Hopefully, we can do better in our next match,” said Yee See.
The 26-year-old acknowledged the difficult task that awaits her and Peng Soon against the 4th ranked Chinese pair.
“The Chinese pair are very strong, we will prepare well for a tough match,” added Yee See.
Meanwhile, another pair, Chen Tang Jie-Valeree Siow came out on top against Choong Hon Jian-Peck Yen Wei in an all-Malaysian affair, winning 21-17, 21-14.
Tang Jie-Valeree will next face home pair and 5th ranked Praveen Jordan-Melati Oktavianti in the second round.
It was the end of the road for independent pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing who disappointingly lost out to Denmark’s 15th ranked Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje 15-21, 16-21.
In the men’s doubles, it was mixed fortunes for Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
Aaron-Wooi Yik overcame Korea’s Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang 21-18, 11-21, 21-11 while Sze Fei-Izzuddin’s fell 19-21, 14-21 to home pair and newly-crowned Indonesian Masters champions Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto.
Aaron and Wooi Yik will next play Dutch pair Ruben Jille-Ties van Der Lecqin.
In women’s doubles, national No. 1 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah taught compatriots Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing a lesson when they disposed them off 21-12, 21-16.Pearly-Thinaah will meet Japan’s Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota for a place in the quarter-finals. The Japanese beat Thai sisters Benyapa Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard 21-14, 21-15.
