Pang Ron-Yee See finally smash down first international title

Hoo Pang Ron and Cheah Yee See were all smiles after winning their first World Tour title at the Hyderabad Open on Sunday.

PETALING JAYA: National mixed pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See finally got the monkey off their backs by claiming their maiden international title at the Hyderabad Open in India.

World No. 57 Pang Ron-Yee See saw off Indonesia’s Adnan Maulana-Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso 16-21, 21-16, 21-11 to become only the third Malaysian winners on the World Tour this season.

Independent shuttlers Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (Thailand Masters and New Zealand Open) and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (Thailand Masters) are the other two pairs to have tasted success this year.

It was a sweet taste of victory for Pang Ron-Yee See as they previously came close by reaching the semi-finals of the Macau Open and the final of the Bangladesh International last year.

Pang Ron-Yee See, who were only paired up early last year, are the fifth-ranked pair in the country after Peng Soon-Liu Ying, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei.

The pair are expected to break into the top 45 in the world rankings tomorrow – a testament to Malaysia’s strength in the department.

Pang Ron was delighted to have beaten the in-form Adnan-Mychelle, who won the Russian Open two weeks ago, and avenged their defeat to the same opponents in April.

Pang Ron-Yee See lost to the Indonesians in the last eight of the Osaka International back in April.

“We didn’t think too much of our earlier defeat to them, ” said Pang Ron, who is the younger brother of women’s doubles shuttler Vivian Hoo.

“All we knew is that as long as we give our best shot, the result will take care of itself.”

Yee See added: “It’s a victory to savour for me and my partner. It means a lot to have won our first title together, ” said Yee See, who also tasted success previously when she won the Russian Open in her brief partnership with Peng Soon in 2017.

“It’s going to be a massive boost to our confidence.

“Every pair will start winning a tournament at some point before going on to enjoy a successful career.

“Hopefully, this marks the start of better things to come for us.”

Pang Ron-Yee See’s victory netted them a paycheque of US$5, 925 (RM25, 000).

They will head to Japan for the Akita Masters, which begins tomorrow.
