Ee Yi-Yew Sin cap splendid show in Germany with Bitburger title

PETALING JAYA: Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin ended their campaign at the Bitburger Open in style by winning their first Grand Prix Gold title in Germany.

The unseeded Malaysians put up a convincing show to beat eight seeds and home favourites Michael Fuchs-Johannes Schoettler 21-16, 21-18 in just 39 minutes in the final in Saarbrucken on Sunday.

World No. 45 Ee Yi-Yew Sin are the first Malaysians to win the men’s doubles crown in the third-tier Grand Prix Gold tournament since its inception in 1988.

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were the first Malaysians to emerge victorious in the tournament, winning the mixed doubles in 2011.

Earlier in the semi-finals on Saturday, Ee Yi-Yew Sin stunned fourth seeds Chen Hung-ling-Wang Chi-lin of Taiwan 21-16, 18-21, 21-17 in 46 minutes while Fuchs-Schoettler edged Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark 21-15, 10-21, 21-15.

The 21-year-old Yew Sin was elated with their success.

“I am happy that we managed to win our first GP Gold title here. It is a memorable outing for us,” said Yew Sin.

National coach Jeremy Gan was pleased as punch with the second-ranked national pair’s achievement.

“It is a good day for the doubles department. Ee Yi-Yew Sin stayed consistent throughout this tournament and did not cave in under pressure. They showed the hunger to win and were more determined. Our future looks good in the doubles,” said Jeremy.

Men’s singles: Shi Yuqi (Chn) bt Sourabh Varma (Ind) 21-19, 22-20.

Men’s doubles: Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin (Mas) bt Michael Fuchs-Johannes Schoettler (Ger) 21-16, 21-18.

Women’s singles: He Bingjiao (Chn) bt Nitachon Jindapol (Tha) 21-11, 21-18.

Women’s doubles: Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan (Chn) bt Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai (Tha) 21-12, 21-19.

Mixed doubles: Zheng Siwei-Chen Qingchen (Chn) bt Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock (Eng) 21-16, 23-21.
