PETALING JAYA: The weightlifting team continues its smashing run at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with Erry Hidayat (pic) contributing silver in the men's 73kg event at the National Exhibition Centre in the UK on Sunday (July 31).
The 23-year-old, son of 1998 KL Commonwealth Games gold medallist Hidayat Hamidon, placed second with a total of 303kg behind favourite Achinta Sheuli, who won the event with a Games record of 313kg.
Erry lifted 138kg in the snatch and was five 5kg behind his Indian rival, who had a leading lift of 143kg.
In the clean and jerk, Erry started with 165kg while his rival cleared 166kg on his first try.
Erry attempted to overtake his rival for the gold when he tried for 176kg but failed the two subsequent attempts to settle for silver.
Sheuli smashed the Games record by lifting a total of 313kg to win the gold medal.
Canada's Shad Darsigny was third with a total lift of 298kg (135kg for snatch and 163kg for clean and jerk).
It is the first silver for Malaysia in Birmingham and the third medal for the weightlifting team.
Aniq Kasdan and Aznil Bidin delivered gold medals in the respective 55kg and 61kg events on Friday (July 29).
