KUALA LUMPUR: National pole vaulter Iskandar Alwi found time despite his busy schedule to tie the knot with his school sweetheart.

The Kluang-born athlete, who is currently training to qualify for the Philippines SEA Games, married Nur Shaliqah Mohd Mustaffa two weeks ago.

The 25-year-old Iskandar said he first laid eyes on Shaliqah when they were studying at the SMK Tun Hussein in Kluang.

“It was love at first sight. We dated for eight years before deciding to get married in April.

“But we had to shelve it as I was preparing for my first World University Games (in Naples last month), ” added Iskandar, who is pursuing a degree in sports science management at Universiti Malaya.

However, he didn’t get to compete as his entry was not confirmed by the team officials before the event.

“I was feeling really down. But luckily, Shaliqah was there to comfort me and I decided to focus on my wedding day, ” said Iskandar, whose wife works at the Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

It looks like their honeymoon will also be postponed as Iskandar will be competing in the Malaysian Open Athletics Championships in Bukit Jalil from Aug 16-18 to qualify for the SEA Games.

Iskandar has a personal best of 5.31m and needs to clear or equal 5.30m to book his ticket.

He only featured in one local meet this year, the Federal Territory Open in Bukit Jalil in February, and cleared 5.20m to bag the gold.

In 2015, Iskandar made his SEA Games debut in Singapore and bagged a bronze (5.05m). Two years later at the KL Games, he finished third again with a leap of 5.25m.
