Hope travelled in letters

I WATCHED Dear You yesterday – and wept. Not only because it tells a beautiful story of loving kindness between two human beings; not just because it is deeply moving that someone would quietly and faithfully assist, for 20 years, a family she had never met, claiming no credit and seeking no recognition. Not least because the story was sincerely told.

I wept because this story is true – true for the many men who had to leave home to survive, earn what they could and send it back, the sufferings they endured, the prejudice they faced, and their loneliness and desperation.
