THE sentencing of the express bus driver, who has since been dismissed by his employer, and his girlfriend on April 17 – to one year and six months’ jail, respectively – for driving a commercial vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public on the North-South Expressway is a sobering reminder of the gravity of road safety.

While some may view the sentence as harsh for a “stunt” that did not lead to a tragic incident, the court was right to prioritise public interest.
