Effectiveness of workplace safety plans depends on people

I REFER to the report “Labourer killed in excavation accident at UMS (Universiti Malaysia Sabah) in KK” (The Star, Sept 6). The victim was digging and burying pipes at the compound when the ditch he was in collapsed, piling soil on him.

As a health and safety practitioner, I had a look at the UMS website and was actually very impressed by the safety standards and compliance requirements outlined in the section titled “OSH Smart workplace – Jawatankuasa Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (JKKP-OSHMS)”.
