PICTURE this: You have been working hard, climbing the career ladder, and you’re finally ready for that next big promotion. But you cannot get it because the person ahead of you is not leaving. That is the core issue with raising the retirement age to 65 for public university professors in Malaysia.
While the government might have good reasons for the change, I believe many academics feel it will actually hurt the universities. The biggest concern is a lack of opportunities for bright young graduates. If senior professors stay on longer, there are fewer jobs and promotions for the next generation. This can create a logjam, frustrating our best and brightest, and potentially forcing them to leave the country for better prospects elsewhere.
