US President Donald Trump did not blink when he pronounced a 90-day hold (for all countries bar China) on April 9 on the “reciprocal tariffs” he had previously announced. Contrary to what international media has supposed, I believe this decision was not a backtrack in the face of stock market meltdowns. It was a reprieve for Corporate America, which, more desperately than foreign governments, have lined up to pay court to Trump and beg his mercy.
Could Trump’s ridiculously high tariffs not only aim to start a trade war with China but also serve an internal purpose?
