THE carbon credit system is one of the compensatory mechanisms for offsetting emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases (GHGs).

When an entity buys a carbon credit, usually from the government, it gains permission to generate one tonne of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of other GHGs.
