I REFER to “What led to cough syrup deaths” published on Nov 25 in The Star (bit.ly/3uDGOzY). My sympathy goes to the families of the 200 children who died after consuming cough syrup tainted with ethylene glycol.

Ethylene glycol is a hazardous chemical that, upon repeated exposure, can affect the kidneys when it metabolises into oxalic acid in the body. The main use of ethylene glycol is as antifreeze in vehicle radiators.
