Of birds and hearing loss

BIRD calls are probably the most beautiful sounds in nature and sweet music to human ears. But birds sing not to entertain but to ensure their survival.

The male of the species will sing to attract the ladies, or holler to mark his domain and keep rivals away. Birds need to do this for life, hence they cannot afford to lose their ability to vocalise, and their hearing. The former is generally the natural outcome of the latter.
